John Mark Sherlock<\/a> studied composition at the University of Western Ontario with Jack Behrens<\/a>, Arsenio Gir\u00f3n<\/a> and David Myska<\/a>. His works have been played by many of Canada’s finest performers and ensembles including Arraymusic<\/a>, the Burdocks, Critical Band, The Ergo Ensemble, Eve Egoyan<\/a>, Linda Catlin Smith<\/a>, the NUMUS<\/a> Ensemble featuring the Penderecki String Quartet<\/a>, Richard Sacks<\/a> , Stephen Clarke and Ensemble KORE. Also, he has written original music for dance or had works used for choreography by Marie-Jos\u00e9e Chartier<\/a>, Heidi Strauss<\/a>, Darryl Tracy, Allen Kaeja<\/a>, Sylvain \u00c9mard<\/a>, Gerry Trentham<\/a>, Jessica Runge<\/a>, Meagan O’Shea\u00a0and Shannon Cooney<\/a> for Dancemakers<\/a>. With composer eldritch Priest, he formed the ensemble, neither\/nor. John has, at various times, received the kind support of the Toronto Arts Council<\/a>, Laidlaw Foundation<\/a>, Canada Council for the Arts<\/a> , Ontario Arts Council<\/a> and the Chalmers Foundation and thanks them all, sincerely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sherlock’s work is remarkable for its use of electro-mechanical keyboards dating from the ’60s and ’70s. He is very likely one of the first composers of his type of abstract aesthetic to use so extensively Rhodes<\/a> and Wurlitzer<\/a> electric pianos, Hohner Clavinet<\/a>\/Pianet\/Cembalet and Hammond<\/a> organ, particularly in ensemble.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
